MobileBytes POS for iPad

Looking for a point-of-sale system with EMV chip card processing? MobileBytes POS for iPad is one of the few EMV capable POS on the market.  As most of us know, chargeback liability has shifted to the merchant.

In October of 2015, Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express mandated liability shifts for fraudulent transactions.  Now, merchants using legacy magnetic stripe readers for accepting credit cards carry the entire burden for merchant chargebacks if a credit card with an EMV chip is swiped. MobileBytes POS uses PAX SP30 ethernet-connected payment terminals with built-in pad for chip + pin use.

And where are we with adoption? MasterCard, the second largest U.S. credit card company, recently announced that 80% of their U.S. cardholders are now EMV chip cards, but compare that to only 30% of U.S. retailers who have installed approved EMV credit card processing terminals. Part of the hurdle has been the time and difficulty with getting terminals approved. However, Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express have instituted new, streamlined processes for making it happen.

In the hospitality industry, we’re hearing more and more requests for EMV chip credit card processing. At the annual Black Hat security conference, which is basically a place for hackers to mingle with government agencies, potential weaknesses with EMV terminals were exposed.

Steve Weisman, an expert on cyberscams and identity theft, writing for USA Today in an August 13, 1016 article describes it:

Meanwhile, at the recent Black Hat security conference, Nir Valtman and Patrick Watson, researchers for NCR, a company that makes point of sale terminals disclosed how sophisticated hackers could steal the credit card number from an EMV chip enabled card’s magnetic strip when retailers, as many still do, fail to utilize encryption capabilities in their card processors.

Security is something that’s often neglected until there’s a problem. Which is why Postec has a three-pronged approach with every customer:  Software, Support & Security.  This is new territory for all of us, and while we can’t promise to have all the answers, we work hard to be a trustworthy and reliable technology partner.
