Memorial Day on Main Street

As a business owner, you can use promotions to salute the troops and to encourage a fun weekend with loved-ones while using the extra time off from work to shop and eat out.

It’s almost time for that long weekend everyone looks forward to. Memorial Day is less than two weeks away and if you have not already started working on promotions for the holiday, here are some ideas to get you started.

Before we get to the business ideas though, it’s best to keep in mind the true meaning of Memorial Day. As a shop owner or restaurateur or even a grocery store owner, it’s good to offer discounts and promotions at times of the year when customers enjoy shopping. But, it’s also a smart idea to balance the commercial side of things with a nod to the incredible sacrifices made by those who fought for our country and our freedom. As a business owner, you don’t want to appear insensitive to veterans and their families.

To that end, you can use promotions to salute the troops and to encourage a fun weekend with loved-ones while using the extra time off from work to shop and eat out.

Give Away Something Summer Related
Because Memorial Day unofficially marks the start of summer, what better way to get customers excited than to offer them something fun for the long hot months. You could offer a free bottle of suntan lotion to the first 50 people that come to happy hour at your restaurant on the Friday of Memorial Day. Not only will those customers enjoy the free gift, they’ll also remember your restaurant each time they open that bottle of suntan lotion.

Push Winter and Spring Merchandise
If you run a seasonal business, then Memorial Day is a great time to clear out that extra merchandise. Anything related to winter and spring can be discounted and sold while customers feel like they are getting a deal for off-season material.

Hold a Summer-Themed Event
If you’re a restaurant or even a retail shop, why not use part of your space to host a summer event? You can go with Hawaiian decorations or feature an outdoor grill with free hotdogs and hamburgers. Keep the kids happy by giving out popsicles and then let the adults enjoy music from a local musician.
