Back to School season isn’t just for retailers selling backpacks and other school essentials. In fact, it’s the second-largest retail season in North America, so here’s a few ideas on how to capitalize.

Back to school season seems to be starting earlier every year. In fact, many stores announce sales beginning as early as July. The high point in the season is mid-August through right before Labor Day weekend.

However, it’s not uncommon to see sales run throughout September.

And why not? Back to school season ranks only behind the winter holiday season in terms of consumer spending.

Thus, even if you haven’t laid out your marketing plans, it’s still not too late to implement a back to school sale.

(Hopefully, you’ve already planned your Labor Day promotion.)

Step In Your Customer’s Shoes

The winter holiday season is supposed to be a joyful time of the year. However, for many people, it’s extremely hectic. So, too, is the back to school season for many parents. Although parents might be thrilled that their kids are once again having some semblance of structure in their lives, nonetheless, it’s a very busy time of year.

School supplies and clothing need to be purchased. It might seem that that’s all there is to back to school season. But as many a parent will tell you, there’s dozens of errands that add up, robbing them of precious little free time.

Consequently, many parents don’t have the resources to, say, cook a healthy family meal. Thus, if you’re a restaurant owner, you can have a to-go family dinner special. Offer an off-the-menu carry out dinner special for four.

Or, if a family chooses to dine in, you can offer several discounts for kids. Buy one kids entree, get the second free. Or if it’s just one child, the child gets a free appetizer.

Just remember that the goal of the promotion, is to make it as appealing to busy parents as possible. Say you own a casual eatery. There might be lots of competition in your area. However, few restaurants are likely offering compelling back to school deals.

In addition to being very busy, some of your customers might feel financially stressed this time of year. New clothing and supplies for kids can add up. So the better the promotion you can offer families, the more they will appreciate and patronize your business.

You can actually turn the financial anxiety of back to school receipts to your advantage . Here’s how: advertise a promotion whereby if a parent (or student) brings in a receipt for school supplies (including electronic goods such as laptops), they’ll receive a 15% discount on their meal; you can advertise the promotion on social media.

Reward Teachers

Regardless of what type of business you own, you should steer promotions to teachers in addition to students and families.

If you’re a restaurant or cafe owner, you can promote back to school PTA meetings at your establishment. Some teachers may particularly like the idea of having the first back to school meeting away from the school environment.

You can also piggyback off of back to school by sponsoring teacher get togethers throughout the school year. Have an employee contact all local schools with a flyer, email and/or phone call for teacher and staff socials at your place of business.

Leverage Social Media

Whether you’re a clothing boutique, restaurant, coffee shop or any other brick or mortar store selling a product, you should post your back to school promotions on social media. Consumers tend to respond better to image-centric promotions. Make sure you have professional-grade photographs of your products or services.

If you have the budget, run Facebook ads. You can target specific demographics that are more likely to respond to back to school advertisements.

Try Traditional Forms of Advertising

If you want to reach campuses directly, you can print flyers and have somebody distribute them directly to students. This, in combination with a social media campaign directed at them can be a successful back to school marketing tactic.
