Georgia World Congress Center

Since opening in 1976, the Georgia World Congress Center (GWCC) has consistently ranked as one of North America’s leading meeting and exhibition facilities – drawing event planners from around the world. In the heart of downtown Atlanta, the GWCC features 1.4 million square feet of prime exhibit space, 12 exhibit halls, 105 meeting rooms, 2 grand ballrooms and an unprecedented combination of amenities. Complemented by the Georgia Dome and Centennial Olympic Park, the three facilities comprise one of the world’s finest convention, sports and entertainment complexes.

Challenge: Having three different, non-integrated, aging POS systems scattered among the concession operations, restaurants and employee dining facilities made it difficult to audit operations, provide quick service, accept credit cards and have dynamic points of sale depending on types of conventions or functions. Additionally, there was no integration of inventory, purchasing or receiving.

Solution: After issuing a comprehensive RFP and evaluating many POS solutions, the GWCC and MGR (the food service management organization for the GWCC and the Dome) selected the Micros 9700 system. Key factors were the system’s ability to handle a large scale multi-revenue center, high transaction operations and its ability to offer different types of POS terminals on the same system. The 9700 can also handle the table service, concessions and cafeteria operations that the GWCC offers. Local service and support provided by Postec was also a major factor in the selection process.

Results: GWCC has its entire facility running on a single platform POS system which is capable of high speed credit card transactions integrated with a state of the art back office inventory system. Accepting credit cards at the concession facilities greatly increased sales and improved the guest experience for trade show attendees. The flexibility provided by moveable wireless POS kiosks and gift card programs enhances flexibility in event layout and services. GWCC and MGR are so impressed with the system that they expanded it into the Club Level at the Georgia Dome, on the same POS system! That underlines the power and flexibility of the Micros 9700 system.
